GPRS enables high speed internet connection as well as other data communication in GSM. GPRS provides speed up to 4 times the regular GSM and uses a packet data service to ensure continuous connection to the internet by subscribers. Previous telecommunication systems including GSM focused on voice communication, GPRS was created to complement the current circuit-switched networks in terms of mobile data communication and this was a revolutionary move towards Enhanced Data GSM Environment (EDGE) and Universal Mobile \telephone Service (UTMS).
Devices that support GPRS can be grouped into three classes.
Class A: can be connected to both GPRS services and GSM service (SMS, voice). Devices in this class require 2 separate radios to connect to both services. To avoid this hardware requirement, a dual transfer mode (DTM) feature is introduced.
