Fritz!Box setup guide for Simbase SIM cards

Fritz!Box devices, made by AVM, work well with Simbase SIM cards. This guide covers hardware setup, first connection, and the APN and roaming settings needed to get online.

Firmware requirementsUse the latest Fritz!Box firmware. Older firmware versions have different steps for the settings below.

Before you start, make sure your SIM is activated in the Simbase dashboard. If it isn't, see Enable or disable a SIM card first.

Step 1: Prepare the hardware

  1. Punch out the correct SIM size from your Simbase SIM card.

  2. Insert the SIM into the router's SIM holder and push until it clicks into place.

  3. Connect the power cable to the router and plug it into an outlet.

Step 2: Connect to the router

It takes the router a few minutes after power-on for its Wi-Fi network to appear. The Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password are printed on the bottom of the device.

  1. Connect your computer to the router's Wi-Fi.

  2. Open a browser and go to 169.254.1.1.

  3. Log in using the username and password printed on the bottom of the router, or included with the device documentation.

Step 3: Set the APN and enable roaming

Once you're in the admin panel:

  1. In the left-hand menu, select Internet, then Account Information.

  2. Enable Specify access point name (APN) and enter simbase in the Access point field.

  3. Scroll down, enable Permit roaming, and set Roaming via provider to Automatically.

  4. Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

That's it, your Fritz!Box should now connect to the internet over your Simbase SIM.

For background on what an APN does and how Simbase's APN profiles work, see Set up the APN.

Common questions

Double-check the APN is exactly simbase (lowercase) and that Permit roaming is enabled with Roaming via provider set to Automatically. If it's still not connecting, confirm your SIM shows as active in the Simbase dashboard, then contact support.

Menu layouts vary by firmware version. Update to the latest Fritz!Box firmware first, the steps in this guide match current firmware.

No, those are account-level features managed from the Simbase dashboard, not the router. See SMS and Public Fixed IPs.
