Activate a Simbase eSIM

A Simbase eSIM is a downloadable SIM profile, instead of a physical card, you install the profile onto a device that supports eSIM (most modern phones, plus eSIM-capable IoT modules). This guide walks you through the two install methods and the one field you should always leave blank.

Which profile your eSIM usesSimbase eSIMs are currently issued as Multi-IMSI profiles (Black or Green). They're not eUICC profiles, so the profile stays bound to the device it's installed on. See SIM profiles for how the profiles differ.

Before you start

You need:

  • A device with eSIM support. iPhone XS or later; most Android flagships from 2019 onward; eSIM-capable IoT modules with the right firmware.

  • registered eSIM in your Simbase dashboard. See Register a SIM.

  • Internet on the device during install (Wi-Fi is fine; you won't have cellular yet).

Find your eSIM details

  1. In the dashboard, open SIM cards and click the eSIM you want to install.

  2. The eSIM detail page shows three things:

    • QR code — easiest install if your device can scan one

    • The SM-DP+ address (e.g. rsp.example.com)

    • The activation code

You'll need the QR code OR the two text strings — not both.

This is the fastest method. Most phones support it.

iPhone (iOS 14+)

  1. Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM (or "Add Data Plan").

  2. Tap Use QR Code.

  3. Scan the QR code from your Simbase dashboard.

  4. Follow the prompts to label the line and choose default settings.

Android (varies by manufacturer)

  1. Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs (or "Mobile Network").

  2. Tap Add eSIM or Download SIM.

  3. Select Use QR code. Some devices ask you to connect to Wi-Fi first.

  4. Scan the QR code from your Simbase dashboard.

  5. Follow the on-screen prompts.

The eSIM activates within a couple of minutes. No confirmation code is needed — leave any prompt for one blank.

Option 2: Install manually (no QR scanner)

Use this for IoT modules, tablets without cameras, or any device that doesn't take a QR code.

  1. On the device, open the eSIM or mobile-network settings.

  2. Choose Enter activation details manually (sometimes labeled "Use activation code").

  3. Enter:

    • SM-DP+ address: (copy from your Simbase dashboard)

    • Activation code: (copy from your Simbase dashboard)

  4. Leave the confirmation code field blank. Simbase eSIMs don't issue one.

  5. Complete setup as the device instructs.

Confirm activation

  1. Wait two to three minutes after install.

  2. The eSIM shows Online in the Simbase dashboard with a recent Last seen.

  3. Run a quick data test on the device.

If the eSIM doesn't come online, double-check the APN configuration (see Set up the APN).

Common questions

This is almost always the APN rather than the eSIM itself. Check that the APN matches your SIM profile, then reboot the device or use Reset connection in the dashboard. See Set up the APN.

Not on another device. The profile stays bound to the device it was installed on, so scanning the code on a second device won't work. If you need to reinstall on the same device, contact support.

On iPhone, eSIM is supported from the XS onward. On Android, look for "Add eSIM" or "Download SIM" under mobile network settings, most flagships from 2019 onward have it. For IoT modules, check the datasheet for eSIM or eUICC support and confirm the firmware is current.
